Based in New York City and Los Angeles, top interior designer Kati Curtis Design highlights the sophistication of New York with the flavor, and just a twist, of California.
With a style that’s unrestrained yet very refined, our team of New York interior designers creates homes and commercial spaces that are the visual stories of the people living or working there. KCD’s interiors are bold statements balanced by quiet details, the dark accents in a white room, the well-defined edge that contains a surprise of color.
Home is the most important space in our lives. The environment you surround yourself in defines how you live, breathe, and feel, so why not make it magical?
Here at Kati Curtis Design, we create spaces that evoke magic through the use of color, pattern, and storytelling.
Our interior designs are not just beautiful for the sake of aesthetics, they are thoughtfully crafted for our clients to be both visually breathtaking yet perfectly livable. KCD designed homes feel like a gallery, full of culture and life and nearly untouchable, yet they are not precious in quality: they are destined to be lived in and enjoyed.
The moment I walk into a space, I can see the life that can be lived there. The joy, the excitement, the memories- it’s all clear. We use color and pattern to bring magic into a home and to create highly personal visual stories that look as though they have always existed this way. With a layered mix of styles, our designs are uniquely crafted for every client. You’ll often see something floral mixed with something edgy, something vintage mixed with something contemporary, or something raw mixed with something refined. We tailor this mix to create the perfect magic blend for every space.
Every space has a unique story to tell, so that is where we start. As a New York interior design firm, we are fortunate enough to be surrounded by a multitude of cultures and styles and eras of design. We start with the architecture and bring in colors that compliment the style of the home. A classical Palladian building inspires shades of terracotta, while a Georgian building reminisces of soft yellows, sky blue, and a delicate pale green. The architecture of the home tells its own story, and we use these narratives as the base for our own design work.
With a background in art history and architecture, combined with an undying love for travel and culture, I’m able to take even a contemporary white box apartment in the middle of Manhattan and transform it into a richly layered jewel box. What starts as a thought of grey turns into highly detailed palettes of color inspired by the space, the clients, and the future stories of the home. When putting the design together, I take the inspiration I’ve seen from around the world, such as a rich blue plaster wall in Morocco or the intricate ceiling details in India, and balance it with antique finds or modern finishes.
Kati is one of the only Leadership of Energy and Efficient Design Accredited Professionals (LEED AP) residential designers in New York City, and her firm is dedicated to not only creating homes that are visually beautiful, but also sustainable and healthy.
Many times “clean” living is associated with the color white, yet we focus on bringing in color safely with natural dyes and water based finishes. When working with our clients to create sustainable interior design, we determine what is the best way to approach the design to be environmentally safe yet still highly refined and beautiful.
If we decide to create a custom piece, we make sure it is made of nontoxic materials and sustainable to the planet. We bring in antique pieces that are high quality and beautiful to reduce waste and reuse. We design for life, whether that be extra durable fabrics that withstand cat scratches and kids’ playtime, or stain resistant rugs that hold up to every wine spill. We mix the beautiful, stunning, and special with the touchable, usable, and livable. Our goal is to fill the home with heirloom pieces that can be enjoyed for years to come.
